Chinese Dragons Sports and Social Club Inc

Based in the Wellington region (most active in Lower Hutt), the Chinese Dragons Sports and Social Club Inc affectionately known simply as "Dragons" has historic pride and has been a place for local Chinese to make new friendships^[1]. The club is well known in the basketball community in the Wellington area, and nationwide amongst the Chinese community.^[2] It has also produced talented Chinese basketball and volleyball players from the beginning of its inception to the present day.^[1]

The Chinese Dragons Sports and Social Club Inc started in 1968^[2], originating from the Good Samaritans Sports Club (The youth club of the Anglican Chinese Church)^[3]. The Chinese Anglican Youth Dragons Basketball Club started in 1974^[3]. Records show that the Dragons held its first basketball tournament on 19-20 August 1972 at the Newtown Stadium and YWCA.^[3] In 1980, the Chinese Anglican Youth Dragons Basketball Club was incorporated under the name “Chinese Anglican Dragons Sports Club Incorporated”, and in 1993, changed its name to the Chinese Dragons Sports and Social Club Incorporated.^[3]
