Born in Canton[1], and living in Hong Kong[2], Ching Fan arrived to New Zealand in 1898[1] aboard the SS Wakatipu, aged 25[1]. Before disembarking, she married Chin Ting. Chin Ting successfully applied to have Ching Fan's £100[1] Poll Tax refunded, setting legal precedent.
