Many Chinese names sound like a burlesque, and are probably a barbarous rendering of the original Mongolian. Fong Fat, Ah Sue, Ah Foo, and the like are common. A newly appointed crier in a County Court was ordered by a judge in a case in which a Chinaman was a witness to call for Ah Song. He looked puzzled for a moment and cast a sly glance at the judge, but finding him grave as an undertaker he turned to the audience and blandly simpered “Gentlemen, would any of you favour His Honor with a song?” In another court a new chum policeman was ordered by the judge to go in search of the official interpreter, whose name was Ah Kat. “Constable go for Ah Kat." Yes, your Honor; is it a tom cat your Honor wishes for?"
