Mr Wong Cho Nam, a Masterton business man, checks his account books with a form of "adding machine" used by his ancestors for more than 2500 years. The suan-pan, or computing tray, is known to have been first used in China in 600 B.C, at least 150 years before the first form of abacus was known in the Mediterranean area. Mr Wong has been using the suan-pan for some years, and says that it can be used for multiplication and division as well as addition. Although not so speedy as the modern mechanical adding machine, the suan-pan is far cheaper and simple to use.[1]
